Westport Police say they responded to Mitchells department store (670 Post Road East) on a report of a recent larceny on Saturday, July 6 around 4:30 p.m.

Officers arrived and were informed by store employees that several pieces of fur were missing from a display. This prompted a review of the store’s surveillance footage, in which it was revealed that a customer entered the store, took the furs to the dressing room and concealed them on her person before exiting the store without buying anything, according to police.

Shortly after the original police call, officers say Mitchells was contacted by Richard’s of Greenwich to report that the suspect was in their store. Greenwich Police responded and conducted surveillance of the suspect, identified as Konis Coleman, 57, of the Bronx.

Police searched Coleman’s person and vehicle and discovered the missing Mitchell’s merchandise as well as numerous devices commonly used to defeat security measures to assist in the crime of larceny.

In total, four coats worth $115,545 were stolen, police say. Coleman was arrested, processed and charged with first-degree larceny and possession of a shoplifting device. Coleman’s bond was initially set at $25,000.

During processing, officers discovered that Coleman had an active arrest warrant held by the New York City Police Department charging her with third-degree grand larceny.

The department was contacted and confirmed the warrant as active, police say. As a result, Coleman faces additional charges for fugitive from justice. Her bond was set at $115,000.

Coleman was unable to post the bonds and was transported to Norwalk Superior Court for arraignment on Monday, July 8.
